FLOODING ISSUES

Many of you will have seen the extent of the recent flooding which is not only causing significant flooding in many bunkers but is also causing flooding in many parts of the course which traditionally have never been flooded.

The fact is that rainfall this January was 125mm and over the past 20 years the average rainfall for January has been around 45mm.

It is now apparent that whilst the substantial increase in rainfall is raising the level of the water table we are also suffering from a combination of inadequate drainage, drainage failure as a result of collapse, silting up and general failure of joints and membranes over the last 100 years or so.

The Club have limited knowledge of the condition and position of drains installed on many of the fairway over the past 100 years. It is likely that we will now have to experience some disruption to the course whilst we not only locate such drains and culverts, but also carry out remedial work where appropriate to upgrade such drainage to meet present and possible future adverse weather conditions.  We will also, where necessary require to improve the access for maintenance of such drains and culverts.

We will initially be concentrating on the following three areas:-

  • The bog area between the 18th tee and the 1st green and to the back of the 1st green which is increasing rapidly in size, (see January 08 news letter) together with the outfall through the wall to the paddy burn
  • The approach area to the 1st green which has a field drain all the way across it that appears to be broken in several places and may require to be left as an open drain/burn and also the drainage of the greenside bunkers to the left
  • The area in front of the 8th tee and the bunkers at the 14th green

It is intended that whatever course of action is undertaken that he work will be carried out in the coming months and be completed before the start of the new season.  Members will be updated regularly on progress and are asked to be patient during this period of possible disruption.
